Real Techniques Makeup Brushes – Review

I’m glad to finally be back after a week of having some difficulties with my computer!  Luckily, in that time, I received a package I’ve been waiting a few weeks for – my Real Techniques makeup brushes!

It was only after I uploaded all my pictures that I realised I’m in this one–please excuse the reflection!

I received a Real Techniques powder brush, stippling brush, and starter set for eyes.  I also grabbed a SPAresource brush the other day at Walmart, so I figured I would include it in this review.

I have been hearing so many great things about Real Techniques that I just had to try a few of their brushes.  I honestly don’t know how I did without these before.  All of the Real Techniques brushes are made with Taklon bristles, which are extremely soft.  There is just no explaining how soft these are on your face.  The handles have an ergonomic design, and they also all have rubber grips, which is amazing for precision (especially with the eye brushes).  You really notice the difference when you have so much more control!

The Powder Brush:  This brush is quite a bit bigger than I expected, and I love it.  I’ve always had powder brushes that are small in comparison.  This one covers well, taking only a fraction of the time.  The bristles are great at picking up my powder, so I have to be careful not to pack on too much, because I’m so used to really working the brush into it; you don’t need to do that with this powder brush.  It also has a nice weight to it; it feels very durable and of good quality.  It almost feels heavy at first, compared to all the other brushes I’ve used.  It is also the softest brush I believe I’ve ever owned.  This brush has a flat bottom to the handle, so you can stand it up if you wish.

The Stippling Brush: This is my first stippling brush ever.  You can use this with wet or dry products, but I bought it for my foundation.  I’ve always used either a flat foundation brush (which I find streaky) or a sponge to apply my foundation, but not anymore.  This brush is amazing for really buffing the foundation into your skin to get an even, airbrushed result.  It has a nice weight as well, and feels like it can withstand the test of time.  It also has very soft bristles, which are easy on your skin and great at distributing your makeup.  Again, this brush can stand on its own due to its flat bottom.

The Starter Set (Eyes):  This brush set comes with five brushes: Base Shadow Brush, Deluxe Crease Brush, Accent Brush, Pixel-Point Eyeliner Brush, and Brow Brush.  The two I’m really loving are the base shadow and crease brushes.  At first, I thought the base shadow brush was a little too wide for my liking, but I’m finding that it really picks up colour beautifully and distributes it well.  It also cuts down the time you take putting on your base colour.  The crease brush is amazing for smokey eyes, because it too is quite large.  I also use it for blending my eyeshadow to prevent harsh lines.  The accent brush is great for highlighting the inner corner of your eye.  I haven’t been using the eyeliner brush for eyeliner, as I personally don’t think it is fine enough for that; I find it perfect for layering some shadow overtop of the eyeliner, though.  I really don’t see myself using the brow brush all that much, because I currently use a brow pencil, but its nice to have in case I decide to try something different.  The other really cool thing about this set is that it comes with a case that also doubles as a stand!

The Cream Shadow Brush:  I picked this up the other day at Walmart, but I was never planning on using it with cream eyeshadow.  I figured I would try it out as a concealer brush, because I didn’t see any concealer brushes there at the time (my Walmart is constantly sold out of a good deal of beauty products).  The bristles are quite stiff (especially when comparing it with the RT brushes), but I find it does its job and is much better than my finger.  I think that for the price, this brush was worth it.

 

Overall, I’m very happy with the quality of all of the Real Techniques brushes, and look forward to using them for a long time.  I’ll definitely be ordering more of their other brushes as well.  These are my go-to brushes now, because of how much fun it is to use these and how well they do their job.  The SPAresource brush will suffice for the time being, as it is still working quite well; but I’m tempted to pick up a Real Techniques concealer brush!  I ordered mine on Amazon because they were all eligible for free super saver shipping on orders over $25.  If you’re interested in ordering Real Techniques brushes from Amazon, you can find them here.
