Rimmel Exaggerate and Kohl Kajal Eyeliners – Review and Swatches

Yesterday when I was out, I picked up 3 new Rimmel eyeliners; one of which being Pantone’s colour of the year, Emerald, so I had to have it.  I’ve always been a huge fan of Rimmel products, especially their eyeliners, because I find that they are soft, long-wearing, and pigmented.

Both Deep Ocean and Emerald Sparkle are ‘Exaggerate’ liners, which twist up.  Royal Blue is a Kohl Kajal pencil liner which needs to be sharpened.

Rimmel Liner Swatches

Top to bottom: Deep Ocean, Emerald Sparkle, Royal Blue.

As you can see, they’re all very pigmented.  They have a creamy texture, so it’s really easy to get a bold colour with them, unlike some liners which are hard and scratchy.  Emerald Sparkle has silver sparkles in it, which the picture didn’t pick up very well, but they’re there!  Royal Blue has almost a metallic finish, which is really beautiful.  Deep Ocean is matte and rich, and just light enough that you can tell that it’s blue and not black.  I often find myself wearing black eyeliner, but I have a feeling that this one is going to be great for me because it will allow me to wear colour on days when I’m not feeling the bright colours, or want to look more sophisticated.

When buying these, I had in mind that I could still wear black eyeliner with Emerald Sparkle and Royal Blue on my lower waterline for a pop of colour.  Honestly, though, I think that the Kohl Kajals are better for this than the Exaggerate Sparkle liners; when I tried to put Emerald Sparkle on my waterline, it took a bit of work to get a bold colour.  This is probably because the Exaggerate liners are waterproof–and I like that, so I’m willing to spend a little bit more time getting it on.  I still managed to get a great look, but if that’s what you’re buying these for, just keep that in mind.  When I tried Deep Ocean, it went on the waterline beautifully! So I’m assuming it may just be the sparkle shades.

A benefit of the Exaggerate liners over the Kohl Kajal, though, is that they’re smudge-proof.  I attempted to rub the swatches with my finger just now, and the two Exaggerate liners stayed in place perfectly, while the Kohl Kajal did smudge, because it retained its creamy texture on my skin.  This could be good though, if you like to smudge your liner.  Another thing to keep in mind when looking for the right fit for you!

Overall, I really like these liners, and Rimmel lives up to my expectations once again.  I bought these at Walmart; I love Walmart because they sell makeup for much less than drugstores.  It’s unfortunate that most of the colours of things are often sold out, because other people have the same idea I do!

If you want to try these out, they’re sold in most drugstores and Walmarts, or click the links below for Amazon:

Emerald Sparkle

Royal Blue

I would love to see if you try other colours. I’ll definitely be picking up more of these sometime, so colour recommendations would be lovely!

What’s your favourite colour of the three?  Do you have a favourite eyeliner brand? Let me know in the comments!

Have a beautiful day all!

  1. Great review! My favourites are deep ocean and royal blue. All of those shades are perfect for spring to give a pop of colour to the eyes. I am going check these out at my local Boots. I find that eyeliners are just as good as mac and higher end brands! I have a blog if you want t have a look, I recently posted about my Essie collection.
